"Picture This" Photo Comp - Open Again in 2011

The Western Demons once again invite you to participate in a fun competition aimed at finding the most interesting or original photo of a Dees supporter while travelling, in Australia or around the world, on holidays or business, and taken at some notable or exotic location that may or may not be related to MFC or AFL footy for that matter.

The idea is, next time you are about to travel, remember to pack some of your Melbourne clothing, or a Demons flag perhaps, and when you come across an interesting location or situation, get someone to take a photo of you proudly displaying your red-and-blue colours, then send the selected photos to the Western Demons email address so as they can be posted on our website for all to see how committed you are to supporting our great team.  At the end of the year, the WD Committee will select the most interesting or original photo(s) to receive a small award.

"Picture This" Photo Comp - 2010 Winner

The winner of the Western Demons 2010 Photo Competition will be announced at the AGM on 16th January, 2011, by our appointed judge and committee person, Amy Fisher.

And the winner is....... - Rod Merritt, for this creative pose showing him doing his best to staighten the Leaning Tower of Pisa, taken during his European holiday with wife Kerrie in January 2010 -

MFC Brings AFL to Shanghai

Melbourne and Brisbane recently played an exhibition game in Shanghai as part of the 2010 Expo.

By all accounts, the event was very successful, and importantly, the Dees came away with a last-minute victory courtesy of some Liam Jurrah magic in the last quarter.

There to witness all the festivities around the game, past player reunions, and generally the many mysteries of China, were our own Mike and Judy Collins, and Mike has penned the attached report for the interest of all Western Demons members.  Enjoy the read!

One of the Dees Sweetest Premierships Remembered!!

 It's 50 years ago virtually to the day that Melbourne won arguably their sweetest premiership to that time.  In 1960, the Demons smashed arch-enemy Collingwood by 48 points, holding the Magpies to just 4 scoring shots (the fewest in GF history) for 14 points (the second-lowest score in GF history).

All victories over Collingwood at any time are special of course, however this belting in 1960 was especially so, as it was sweet revenge for a shock loss to Collingwood in 1958 GF after Melbourne had dominated the competition for the entire year, in fact for virtually the entire decade!

Melbourne's legendary firebrand coach, Norm Smith, is recorded as stating after the 1960 victory...."we were so much better than Collingwood that day that they shouldn't have even got the ball to the goalsquare, yet alone kick a damn goal!"

It's little wonder that many members of that team (and others who achieved the ultimate success under Norm Smith in the 1950s and '60s) still regularly gather in Melbourne for lunch, and in September this year, the group pictured above had a reunion at the MCG to relive their magnificent achievements.
