Trevor Johnson, better known to his team mates as "Phantom", joined the Melbourne Football Club in 1953, and undertook his National Service in that year. In 1954, he played with the Seconds, making his senior debut in 1955.
An illustrious career then followed, with Trevor playing in the 1955, 1956, 1957 and 1960 premiership sides. In 1955, he received the Best First Year Player award. His participation in the 1956 Olympic Year Premiership team was significant as the entire side was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2004.
Trevor was made a Life Member of MFC in 1962.
In all, he played 118 games, kicking 9 goals. He could be classified as a "utility" player as he played in the back pocket, centre half back, centre half forward, and sometimes as a ruckman, being a "Collingwood six footer"!
Upon retirement, Trevor coached in metropolitan Melbourne, and then in the Western District at Port Fairy, following which he moved to Western Australia with his family.
In the then very much "outer suburb" of Wanneroo, he established Crown Mushrooms, which produces much of this state's mushroom supplies and which has expanded into a large and successful enterprise.
On Australia Day 2006, Trevor was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in recognition of his "service to the community of Wanneroo, particularly through local sporting and service organisations".
The Western Demons are indeed fortunate to have Trevor Johnson as its patron in 2007. His football career would be the envy of many of today's "stars", while his OAM is public recognition of his contribution to the wider community.
Trevor is a fine writer and sometime poet, and he has kindly agreed that a couple of his works can be reproduced here for the interest of our website readers, the first a great poem about the one and only Barrass .. Aussie Rules is the Game
.. and another about the mighty MFC team of '56 ..The Mighty Demons of 56
.......Thanks Trevor.
